CERTAIN JUSTICE by Dennis Carstens
It’s not often I HAVE to finish a book I’m reading. Don’t get me wrong, I consider myself a bookworm and love a good ending, but that feeling of needing to know what happens at the end–at the expense of everything else–is rare. Dennis Carstens’ Marc Kadella legal drama series provides just that rarity. And Certain Justice even managed to derail a couple of nights out I had planned this month (“I know we’re late, but hold on! I need to finish just this one chapter…”)
In some ways it’s much like other legal thriller series–but this one’s resplendent with clever, often times laugh-out-loud courtroom scenes (like one where an under-the-influence driver tries to talk her way out of having drunkenly assaulted a cop) that provide genre fans with plenty of witty dialogue and quickened pacing. And there’s also suspense–twists and turns you don’t see coming.
Certain Justice revolves around a handful of exonerated criminals who all swear they’re innocent when a serial killer goes on a grisly rampage following their releases. Picking out the psychopathic murderer is just one of the thrills: I dare you not to fall in love with gorgeous, brilliant PI Maddy Rivers.
This one’s my favorite, but the whole series is great! Perfect for readers who love their hard-boiled mysteries gritty and street-wise, with a dose of legal jargon.
